High Definition video format, typically 1280x720 (720p) or 1920x1080 (1080p).
Definition
High Definition (HD) refers to video resolutions above Standard Definition (SD). The two HD standards are 720p (1280x720) and 1080i/p (1920x1080), both with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Practical Application
HD was the standard from 2005-2015 for television and home video. Still relevant today for broadcast, but increasingly being replaced by 4K. 720p is used for sports broadcasts (higher frame rate).
Technical Details
720p: Progressive, optimal for 50/60 fps. 1080i: Interlaced, two fields form one frame. 1080p: Progressive, cinema standard. Bandwidth: HD-SDI (1.5 Gbit/s), 3G-SDI for 1080p50/60.
