The 24p frame rate at HD resolution (1920x1080) emerged as a pragmatic solution for cinematic aesthetics without the cost of RAW recording. You know the problem: classic television runs at 50Hz (PAL) or 60Hz (NTSC), which makes motion appear smooth and "soapy." However, as soon as you switch to 24 frames per second, the viewer immediately recognizes the cinema feel – fewer interpolated intermediate frames create the illusion of motion blur that we know from 35mm projections.

In practical work with HD-24p – for example, on the Panasonic GH5 or GH6 – you quickly get used to the preview in the EVF appearing a bit "flickerier" than at 50p or 60p. This is not a fault; it is intentional. You must not fall into the reflex of increasing the frame rate "so that it looks smoother." The final edit will show you that 24p was the right decision. Storage size and bitrate are significantly lower than with 4K projects, which is a considerable relief on demanding shoots or without a premium SSD rig.

Practical Handling: Ensure that your monitor or external recorder can also output 24p correctly – some cheaper models automatically convert to 50p, which contradicts the recording. In the edit, 24p sequences are processed by default in 24fps timelines; a conversion to 25p (for PAL broadcasting) always costs some fluidity, but it is feasible. Shutter Angle is often set to 180° at 24p, which corresponds to a shutter speed of 1/50s – this creates the characteristic motion blur quality you know from cinema.

HD-24p bridges the gap between fully compressed H.264 recordings and uncompressed 4K RAW. This format has proven particularly effective in documentary or low-budget productions: you don't need a camera assistant budget for data management, laboratory color correction is not strictly required, and yet the cinematic look is achieved. Some DoPs even use HD-24p as a B-camera format alongside larger systems because interoperability in the edit runs more smoothly than with mixed-format pipelines.
