Logarithmic gamma curve maximizing captured dynamic range for post-production flexibility.

Definition

Log (Logarithmic) recording stores image data with a logarithmic curve instead of standard gamma. This maximizes the usable dynamic range within the available bit depth.

Practical Application

Professional production works almost exclusively in Log: ARRI Log-C, Sony S-Log, RED Log3G10, Canon C-Log. The flat, desaturated raw image is transformed into the target color space during grading.

Technical Details

Log curves compress highlights and expand shadows. More stops fit into 10/12-bit. Disadvantages: Flat preview image, requires LUT for monitoring. ACES unifies different Log formats.
