Full-frame cinema camera built on the Alpha 7S III sensor, bridging stills and motion for run-and-gun and content creation workflows.

Technical Details

The BSI-CMOS sensor delivers 4K footage up to 120fps in 4:2:2 10-bit internally, as well as 16-bit RAW output via HDMI. Dual Base ISO is 640/12800, with a maximum ISO of 409600. Four XLR audio inputs via the included adapter, timecode synchronization, and CFexpress Type A/SD card slots complete the features. The BIONZ XR processor enables Real-Time Tracking and Focus Breathing Compensation with compatible lenses.

The S-Log3 profile offers 15+ stops of dynamic range. Internal recording is in XAVC S-I (All-I) or XAVC HS with H.265 compression. The mechanical shutter has been removed; all recording is electronic.

History & Development

Sony introduced the FX3 in February 2021 as the smallest camera in the FX Cinema Line. It arose from the realization that many filmmakers were primarily using the α7S III for video and were seeking more compact, specialized solutions. The camera marked Sony's foray into the prosumer segment between consumer mirrorless cameras and high-end cinema cameras like the FX9.

In 2022, a firmware update followed with Cinetone profiles and enhanced focus features.

Practical Use in Film

The FX3 quickly established itself in documentary productions and as a B-camera for larger productions. Its small size allows for gimbal work, drone shots, and discreet documentary filmmaking. The continuous 4K120p makes it a preferred choice for slow-motion sequences.

Netflix-approved productions often use the FX3 for establishing shots and second-unit footage. Its high ISO performance makes it ideal for available-light scenarios and night shoots. The electronic shutter largely eliminates rolling shutter issues with fast movements.

Comparison & Alternatives

Direct competitors include the Canon EOS R5 C and Panasonic GH6, with the FX3 scoring points for better low-light performance. Compared to the α7S III, it offers a more robust body and more professional audio connections, but omits photo functions and an EVF.

Positioned as an alternative to the Red Komodo or Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro, the FX3 is a more straightforward, ready-to-use solution with an established E-mount ecosystem. For pure studio productions, the FX6 offers more manual controls and professional ergonomics.

News

The successor generation, Sony FX3 II, is expected in 2026, according to leaked information. Sony itself has not yet made any official statements regarding an 'FX 2026' model. Rumors focus on further development of the compact cinema camera line.

News

Rumors about a Sony FX3 Mark II suggest a 16-megapixel full-frame sensor with an improved stacked architecture. The successor model is expected to feature enhanced AI autofocus capabilities with real-time subject recognition and predictive tracking. Sony is positioning the new generation as a redefinition of compact cinema cameras with improved dynamic range and ISO performance.
