History & Development
Sony introduced the FX6 in September 2020 as the successor to the FS7 series and an addition to the Venice line. The market launch took place in December 2020 at a price of approximately 6,000 Euros. The development aimed to combine the compactness of DSLRs with professional cinema features. Firmware updates successively expanded functionality, including Breathing Compensation and advanced focus tools.
Practical Use in Film
The FX6 quickly established itself in documentary productions and independent films due to its handy form factor combined with professional image quality. Netflix approved the camera for original productions. Typical workflows utilize the Dual Base ISO (800/12,800) for low-light situations without external lighting. The autofocus with Real-time Tracking is suitable for run-and-gun shooting, while the S-Log profiles offer sufficient grading flexibility for cinema quality. The compact design allows for gimbal use without rigging.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the Canon C70, the FX6 offers a larger sensor and better low-light performance, while the C70 scores with its integrated DGO sensor. The Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro costs about half as much but requires more rigging for professional shoots. Sony's own FX9 offers a larger body with more physical controls and a Super35 mode. The RED Komodo competes with higher resolution and a more compact design, but requires proprietary workflows.
News
In March 2026, Sony released firmware update 6.00 for the FX6, bringing significant improvements. The new BIG6 user interface is based on the Venice 2 monitoring system and offers more professional operational options. Additionally, the update enables Blackmagic RAW output via HDMI for the first time, as well as improved autofocus at common frame rates.
