Sony's 8.6K full-frame cinema camera with detachable 1.2kg sensor head, dual native ISO 800/3200, and integrated ND filter system for high-end productions.

Technical Details

The 8.6K full-frame sensor (8640 x 5760 pixels) supports internal recording in X-OCN XT/ST and XAVC-H codecs onto CFexpress Type A cards. The Dual Native ISO system operates at ISO 800 and ISO 3200 with minimal noise development. The camera offers 8K recording at 30p, 6K at 60p, and 4K at 120p in 16:9 format. The modular design allows the 1.2 kg sensor block to be separated from the 4.8 kg main unit. The integrated ND filter system provides 0.3 to 2.4 ND stops in 0.3 increments.

History & Development

Sony introduced the Venice 2 in April 2021 as the successor to the original Venice (2017). Development focused on higher resolution and expanded frame rates after the first Venice established itself in productions like "1917" and "Top Gun: Maverick." Version 2 integrated insights from four years of practical use and Netflix certification of its predecessor.

Practical Use in Film

Ridley Scott used the Venice 2 for "House of Gucci" (2021), where the Dual ISO system proved convincing in challenging lighting conditions within Italian palaces. The detachable sensor block design enables gimbal use and tight spaces without quality loss. Typical workflows utilize the X-OCN ST format for maximum post-production flexibility in Netflix and Disney+ productions. The high ISO performance significantly reduces the need for additional lighting, while the 8K resolution offers reframing options for various output formats.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ARRI Alexa LF, the Venice 2 offers higher native resolution (8.6K vs. 4.5K) and more flexible frame rates, while ARRI traditionally leads in color reproduction and workflow integration. The RED Monstro VV achieves similar resolution but requires external recording for uncompressed formats. The Canon C500 Mark II remains relevant as a more cost-effective alternative but does not match the ISO performance of the Venice 2. For high-end productions with Netflix requirements, the primary competitor is the ARRI Alexa 35, which, however, only became available in 2022.
