Native RAW file format for RED cameras — losslessly compressed, allowing maximum Color Correction flexibility in post-production.

Technical Details

R3D files store raw data with resolutions ranging from 4K (4096×2160) to 8K (8192×4320), depending on the camera model. Compression is handled by RED's REDCODE algorithm with factors from 2:1 to 22:1, where lower values indicate higher quality. A typical 4K R3D file at 8:1 compression generates approximately 1.5 GB of data per minute. The format uses 12-bit quantization during recording, extended to 16-bit for post-production. R3D supports metadata such as ISO, white balance, exposure, and lens information, which remain adjustable after capture.

History & Development

RED Digital Cinema introduced the R3D format in 2007 with the RED ONE camera, revolutionizing the digital filmmaking landscape. Company founder Jim Jannard developed the system as an alternative to expensive 35mm film workflows. The second generation, with improved compression, followed in 2010 with the EPIC series. The current R3D version 3.0 was introduced in 2018 with the DSMC2 cameras, offering enhanced HDR support and improved metadata integration.

Practical Use in Film

R3D quickly established itself in Hollywood productions: "District 9" (2009), "The Social Network" (2010), and "Gone Girl" (2014) were shot entirely on RED cameras. The typical workflow involves recording to CFast or RED Mini-Mag media cards, transcoding to ProRes proxies for editing, and final grading directly from the R3D files. The high data rate requires powerful workstations – for 6K footage at 24fps, at least 32 GB of RAM and dedicated GPUs are recommended.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike Blackmagic's CinemaDNG or ARRI's ARRIRAW, R3D offers stronger compression at comparable quality. Sony Venice RAW and Canon Cinema RAW Light are modern competitors with similar characteristics. R3D excels through seamless integration into RED's ecosystem from camera to post-production, while open formats like OpenEXR provide broader software compatibility. For budget productions, 10-bit formats like ProRes RAW often replace the storage-intensive R3D today without significant quality loss.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
