Compact 6K global-shutter camera with Super-35 CMOS sensor, 16+ stops of dynamic range and RF mount for high-quality handheld and gimbal production.

Introduction

The RED Komodo is RED's answer to the compact, high-resolution digital cinema camera market. It brings RED's legendary REDCODE RAW compression, high resolution, and professional color science into a handheld package optimized for gimbal and handheld shooting. The global shutter eliminates rolling shutter artifacts, which is crucial for fast-moving shots.

History & Development

RED announced the Komodo at NAB in 2019 and began shipping in mid-2020. It followed the significantly larger RED Helium and marked RED's entry into the compact camera market. In 2021, RED expanded the line with the Komodo-X, featuring an improved sensor and up to 80 fps at 6K resolution. The development aimed to offer RED's image quality in a more manageable format for run-and-gun shoots and smaller productions.

Practical Use in Film

The Komodo is particularly well-suited for handheld shots, gimbal work, and tight shooting situations. Documentarians appreciate its small size and high image quality, while narrative filmmakers use it for second unit work or as a crash cam. The global shutter eliminates rolling shutter artifacts during fast camera movements. Typical workflows involve external monitors like SmallHD or Atomos recorders for enhanced recording capabilities.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Sony FX6, the Komodo offers higher resolution and RED's color science but requires more external accessories. The ARRI Alexa Mini LF surpasses it in dynamic range and low-light performance but is three times heavier and more expensive. Direct competitors include the Canon C70 and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, each offering different strengths in usability and value.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
