RED's latest 8K cinema camera featuring the V-Raptor sensor with enhanced low-light performance and the most compact body design in the current RED lineup.

Technical Details

The 40.96 × 21.60 mm VV sensor delivers 8192 × 4320 pixels at full resolution and supports various crop modes such as 6K FF (Full Frame) and 4K S35. The camera processes up to 600 MB/s data rate at 8K/120p in REDCODE RAW. The body weighs 1.9 kg (body only) and features a modular design with interchangeable mounts (PL, EF, RF). Internal storage utilizes RED Mini-Mag cards with up to 1.3 TB capacity. The RED OS operating system enables firmware updates and offers advanced menu functions via the 4.7" touchscreen.

History & Development

RED Digital Cinema introduced the V-Raptor in 2021 as the successor to the Monstro and Helium sensors. Development focused on combining the Vista Vision format with Global Shutter technology to eliminate rolling shutter artifacts. In 2022, the V-Raptor XL followed with an improved cooling system and expanded I/O options. The current V-Raptor 8K VV (2023) optimizes power efficiency and reduces operating noise by 15 dB compared to its predecessor.

Practical Use in Film

Cinematographers use the V-Raptor for high-speed sequences where the Global Shutter offers critical advantages – for example, in action scenes with fast camera movements or LED walls. The Vista Vision sensor allows for shallower depth of field than S35 cameras at the same focal length. Typical workflows utilize REDCODE RAW at medium compression rates (8:1 to 12:1) for an optimal balance between file size and image quality. The high ISO performance (usable up to ISO 6400) significantly reduces lighting requirements on set.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ARRI Alexa 35, the V-Raptor offers higher resolution (8K vs. 4.6K), while the Alexa delivers superior color fidelity and workflow integration. The Sony FX9 costs about a third but does not achieve the same flexibility in RAW workflows. The Canon C500 Mark III is considered a direct competitor with similar resolution but lacks a Global Shutter. The V-Raptor is primarily suited for high-end productions with complex VFX requirements or technically demanding sequences.

Current News

In 2025, RED expanded the V-Raptor series with the new V-Raptor XE variant. The camera continues to be a popular target for accessory manufacturers like Tilta and SmallRig, who develop modular rig systems specifically optimized for cinema cameras like the V-Raptor.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
