Overview
Lee 211 is a lighting gel manufactured by the British company LEE Filters. It belongs to the Neutral Density (ND) filter family and is designated as 0.9 ND. The gel reduces the light output of a fixture without altering color or color temperature – thus, the light impression remains neutral.
A density of 0.9 corresponds to a reduction of three f-stops (3 Stops). Within the LEE ND range, the 211 is positioned between weaker densities (e.g., 0.3 ND = 1 Stop, 0.6 ND = 2 Stops) and stronger gels.

The polyester base material is heat-resistant (manufacturer specification around 180 °C / 356 °F). The gel is available as rolls in various widths and core types, as well as in sheets.
On-Set Usage
The 211 is placed in front of a fixture (inserted into a filter holder, clamped in barn doors, or mounted on a frame/floppy) when a light is too bright but cannot be dimmed sufficiently, or when dimming would shift the color temperature. Since ND gels purely reduce brightness, the color of the light is preserved.
- Balance the brightness of a single fixture against other lamps in the set.
- Dim daylight coming through windows by attaching the gel directly to the pane or a frame.
- Reduce the amount of light to allow for a wider aperture at the desired exposure.
Multiple ND gels can be stacked for stronger dimming; the reductions then add up (two layers of 211 correspond to approximately six f-stops).
