Lee 181 "Congo Blue" is a color filter (lighting gel) from the color range of the British manufacturer Lee Filters. It is not a light source or grip equipment, but a heat-resistant polyester film placed in front of the luminaire that colors the light.
Congo Blue is one of the most saturated filters in the Lee range: a very deep, dark blue that, according to the manufacturer, works in combination with light sources such as blacklight. It is designed as a pure effect and mood filter, not for color temperature correction or conversion.
The high saturation comes with a very high light loss. The transmission values specified by the manufacturer are in the range of less than one percent:

According to the manufacturer, the light loss is approximately −7 1/3 stops. The light source must be dimensioned accordingly brightly if a significant light output is desired.
In addition to the classic filter for incandescent/halogen light, Lee offers CL181, an LED-optimized version that reproduces the color impression of the classic 181 on artificial light (3200 K) using cool white LEDs (over 6000 K).
Lee 181 is used for effect and atmosphere lighting: deep blue night and moonlight moods, dramatic color accents, background and cyclorama lighting, as well as stage and event lighting. Due to the extreme light loss, the filter is primarily suitable for strong spotlights and for accents, less so as broad working light. Like all color filters, it is attached to the gel frame or with filter clips on the barn doors and should be mounted with sufficient distance from the hot lamp.
