LEE 241 ("Fluorescent 5700 Kelvin") – a correction filter that converts tungsten light to fluorescent-like 5700 K daylight-balanced output.

Overview

LEE 241 – officially "241 LEE Fluorescent 5700 Kelvin" – is a lighting correction filter (Lighting Gel) from the manufacturer LEE Filters (now part of Panavision). It is not a device or a lamp, but a colored filter sheet that is stretched in front of a spotlight or light source to change the color temperature of the light.

The function described by the manufacturer: The filter converts Tungsten light (artificial light, 3200 K) into fluorescent-like light of 5700 K – described as "cool white / daylight". This makes the 241 part of the family of technical conversion and correction filters used in professional film, TV, and photography lighting for targeted adjustment of light color.

Technical Data

The following values are from the official LEE Filters product page:

PropertyValue
Designation241 LEE Fluorescent 5700 Kelvin
EffectTungsten (3200 K) → approx. 5700 K (cool white / daylight)
Transmission (Tungsten Source, Y value)29 %
Transmission (Daylight Source, Y value)27.4 %

The filter is available in different formats – as a roll (e.g., on a 1" or 2" core or as a Quick Roll with variable width, length approx. 7.62 m / 25 ft) and as cut sheets (Full Sheet approx. 122 × 53 cm, Half Sheet approx. 61 × 53 cm). The base material is a heat-resistant polyester film.

Use on Set

The 241 is typically used when Tungsten sources need to be adapted to a cooler, fluorescent or daylight-like lighting environment – for example, to mix conventional spotlights with existing fluorescent tubes or daylight without having to make color corrections in post-production.

As is common with dimmable Tungsten sources, it should be noted that the resulting color temperature shifts when dimmed: According to the manufacturer, it drops to around 2700 K at 50% power and around 2000 K at 30%. Since the filter absorbs about 70% of the light, the light loss must be factored into the lighting setup.
