Overview
LEE 271 "Mirror Silver" is not a color or diffusion filter, but a mirrored reflector material from the range of technical filters by LEE Filters. It is used to reflect or "bounce" light, rather than coloring or scattering it – like a gel in front of the light source.
The material can be used on both sides: the mirrored silver side produces a hard, specular (directional) reflection, while the white reverse side can be used as a softer reflective surface. Each side thus provides a different light character.
Classification
Within the LEE range, the 271 belongs to the reflectors/scrims, not to diffusion or color effect gels. Related reflector materials from the manufacturer include matte or soft silver variants, which, compared to the 271, provide a less specular, more scattered reflection.
Set Usage
The 271 is used to redirect existing or supplied light and to fill in shadows. The hard, specular reflection of the silver side is suitable for directional bouncing over longer distances ("long throw") as well as for targeted effects where a hard, accentuated light is desired.
- Silver Side (mirrored): hard, directional reflection, higher brightness, higher contrast character.
- White Reverse Side: softer, more diffuse reflection for gentle fill light.
