Digital IMAX projection system with dual-2K projectors since 2008. Enables IMAX experience in converted multiplex theaters with 1.90:1 aspect ratio – criticized as 'LieMAX' due to being significantly smaller than true 15/70-IMAX.

What is IMAX Digital?

IMAX Digital is a digital projection system introduced by IMAX Corporation in 2008. It enables IMAX presentations in converted standard cinema auditoriums without the massive infrastructure of classic 15/70 IMAX.

The system uses two 2K projectors that project one above the other to increase brightness and perceived sharpness.

The "LieMAX" Problem

Cinephiles and film critics disparagingly use the term "LieMAX" for IMAX Digital:

Criticisms:

  • Significantly smaller screens than true IMAX
  • 1.90:1 instead of 1.43:1 – loses ~25% image height
  • Resolution far below film IMAX
  • Often only converted standard auditoriums
  • Premium price for "Premium Lite"

Defense:

  • Makes the IMAX experience more widely available
  • 3D technology often better than film
  • More consistent image quality
  • Lower operating costs

Dual Projector System

IMAX Digital uses two Christie xenon projectors:

  • Both project the identical image
  • Slight offset for higher perceived sharpness
  • For 3D: polarized glasses, both projectors for L/R eyes

1.90:1 vs. 1.43:1

The reduced aspect ratio is the biggest limitation:

1.43:1 (Film IMAX):

  • Almost square
  • Utilizes full height
  • Immersive "window" feeling

1.90:1 (Digital IMAX):

  • Closer to 16:9
  • Less vertical space
  • "Widescreen" instead of "Window"

Films natively shot for IMAX 1.43:1 (like Nolan's films) lose significant impact when projected digitally.

IMAX Digital in Numbers

  • 2008 – First IMAX Digital installation
  • 2024 – Over 1,500 IMAX Digital auditoriums worldwide
  • ~80% of all IMAX cinemas are digital
  • $5-8 million – Installation costs (vs. $15-20 million for film IMAX)

Evolution to IMAX Laser

IMAX has recognized that Digital-2K is no longer state-of-the-art. The further development, IMAX Laser, offers:

  • 4K resolution
  • Higher brightness
  • Option for 1.43:1 aspect ratio
  • Better contrast

IMAX Digital is gradually being replaced by Laser systems.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
