Fast manual 50mm prime lens by Chinese manufacturer TTArtisan with maximum aperture f/0.95.

Overview

The TTArtisan 50mm f/0.95 is a fast, manual prime lens from Chinese optics manufacturer TTArtisan. It is not lighting or grip equipment, but a camera lens. Its extremely wide maximum aperture of f/0.95 allows for shooting in very low light and produces a distinctly shallow depth of field with soft bokeh – an affordable counterpart to classic high-speed optics like the Leica Noctilux.

Under the designation "50mm f/0.95", TTArtisan offers two different products that should not be confused:

  • Full-frame variant (M 50mm F0.95 ASPH): Rangefinder lens with Leica M mount, covers full-frame (35mm film format).
  • APS-C variant: Significantly more affordable lens for mirrorless system cameras (e.g., Fujifilm X, Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, L-Mount, MFT); crops to a 35mm equivalent field of view of approximately 75mm on a 1.5x crop sensor.

Both are purely mechanical: manual focus and manually set aperture, with no electronic contacts to the camera.

Use on Set

On film sets, the TTArtisan 50mm f/0.95 is used as an affordable, fast lens for available light and low-light situations, as well as for stylized shots with a very shallow plane of focus. As it is entirely manual, it is suitable for classic hand-focus workflows with a follow focus; there is no electronic aperture control or lens data transmission to the camera. At maximum aperture, soft rendering with lower contrast and visible aberrations are typical – a character that can be used creatively, but is reduced for technically clean shots by stopping down (e.g., to f/5.6–f/8).

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
