Fast manual 50mm standard lens by 7Artisans with Leica M mount and f/1.1 aperture; commonly adapted to mirrorless cameras for video production.

Overview

The 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 is a manual prime lens (normal focal length) from the Chinese manufacturer 7Artisans (7artisans Photoelectric). It was primarily developed as an affordable, extremely fast alternative for Leica M rangefinder cameras, but is often adapted for use with mirrorless system cameras (e.g., Sony E, Leica/Panasonic L, Fujifilm X) via an adapter in film and video production. It is not a dedicated cine lens: it lacks standardized 0.8 pitch gears for follow focus, has no electronic aperture communication, and is not parfocal. Its appeal for moving images lies in its fast f/1.1 maximum aperture, its purely mechanical, fully manual operation, and the characteristic image rendering of its Sonnar-style design.

On-Set Usage

In the video and independent film sectors, this lens is primarily used as an affordable, very fast option for available light and low-budget shoots. The f/1.1 maximum aperture allows for shooting in low light and produces a shallow depth of field with pronounced bokeh; at wide open, soft rendering and visible image flaws (including vignetting and glow) are typical and are sometimes used as a stylistic choice. As the focus is purely manual and the focus throw is relatively short, the lens is better suited for static shots than for precise focus pulls. For professional set use, cine features such as focus gears, a linear focus scale with a long throw, and uniform front diameters are missing; therefore, additional solutions are required for matte box and follow focus workflows.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer

The 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 is an absolute game-changer for low-budget low-light production. Its extreme aperture allows me to get smooth shots with minimal practical lighting, and the bokeh is surprisingly elegant for the price. I'd expect the solid build quality from lenses costing around 3000 Euros.

Director

With this lens, I can practically eliminate the technical disadvantage of small budgets. I can also shoot at dusk or in naturally lit rooms, which incredibly frees up my directorial script. The 50mm is my favorite for intimate close-ups with that creamy bokeh quality.

Producer

The price-performance ratio is incredible – under 400 Euros for a fast cine lens. This drastically reduces lighting costs and allows for faster shooting days without production downtime due to complicated lighting setups.
