Overview
The Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 is a fast prime lens from the Chinese manufacturer Shenyang Zhongyi Optics (brand name Mitakon / ZY Optics). The first version was introduced in 2014 for the Sony E-mount; revised generations (Mark II, Mark III) and variants for other mounts followed later.
Characteristic is the extreme maximum aperture of f/0.95 – i.e., below f/1.0. It is a pure manual focus lens without autofocus; the aperture is also set manually on the lens, without electronic communication with the camera. The lens covers full-frame (35mm) and delivers a normal-angle field of view at a 50mm focal length.
Technical Specifications
The values apply to the current generation (Mark III); older versions differ in details (e.g., aperture blades, optical design).
| Specification | Value |
|---|
| Focal Length | 50 mm |
| Image Circle | Full-frame (35mm) |
| Aperture Range | f/0.95 to f/16 |
| Focusing | Manual only |
| Optical Design (Mark III) | 10 elements in 7 groups |
| Minimum Focusing Distance | 0.5 m |
| Filter Thread (Mark III) | 67 mm |
The number of aperture blades varies by generation (early Sony E version: 9 blades; Mark III: 11 blades). Available mounts include Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Canon EF, and L-mount, among others; a Leica M variant also exists.
On-Set Usage
In film and photography, the lens is primarily used for its wide-open aperture: f/0.95 allows shooting in very low light and produces an extremely shallow depth of field with pronounced bokeh. As it is a pure photo/stills lens with a photo housing and no continuous focus gear ring, a retrofitted follow focus gear is usually necessary for motion picture productions. Due to the lack of autofocus and manual aperture, precise manual focusing is mandatory – at f/0.95, the focus range is very narrow and consequently critical.
