Overview
ProRes 4444 is a professional video codec from Apple, belonging to the ProRes family. Unlike the terms typically described in the lexicon under lighting and grip, this is not set equipment, but rather a file and compression format for image recording and post-production. ProRes 4444 is designed as an intermediate or mastering codec: it delivers very high image quality at moderate data rates and is used both directly in cameras (e.g., for recording to card or external recorders) and in editing, color grading, and compositing.
The designation 4444 refers to the sampling structure of the image: three full channels for luminance and color (4:4:4, meaning no chroma subsampling) plus a fourth channel for alpha (transparency). This distinguishes ProRes 4444 from the more common ProRes 422 variants, which operate with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling and do not carry an alpha channel.

The data rates are target values and scale with resolution and frame rate. ProRes 4444 XQ is the highest quality tier of the family and is intended for material with a particularly large dynamic range (HDR).
Use in Production and Post
ProRes 4444 is used wherever maximum color information and tonal range reserves are required: for camera recording in demanding productions, as a mastering format, and especially in compositing and motion graphics. The carried alpha channel allows for low-loss exchange of image elements with transparency (e.g., greenscreen keying, titles, or VFX elements) between programs, without burning them into a background.
For pure editing tasks without transparency and without the need for 4:4:4 color, ProRes 422 (HQ) is often sufficient, generating smaller data volumes. ProRes 4444 is the choice when color precision, tonal depth, or the alpha channel are prioritized over a more compact file size.
