Use of camera filters (diffusion, ND, color, effect) to deliberately shape the image in-camera — before digital post-processing.
Optical filtration refers to all measures taken to influence the image using physical filters in front of the sensor. In contrast to digital image corrections in post-production grading, filtered looks are created within the optics themselves: light rays are physically refracted, scattered, absorbed, or colored before they reach the sensor. The result possesses a quality that subsequent simulations rarely can replicate.
Categories
Neutral density (ND) filters reduce light without color shift—essential for wide apertures in bright conditions. Diffusion filters (Black Pro-Mist, Hollywood Black Magic, Tiffen SoftFX) scatter light around bright points and soften highlights. Effect filters like ARRI Impression or Tiffen Low Con alter contrast, sharpness, and color depth simultaneously. Color filters shift color temperature or create subtle tones.
Rear-mounted Filtration
Certain lens families—notably ARRI Signature Primes—allow the mounting of special filters directly behind the last lens element (rear-mount). This offers a crucial advantage: the filter effect is consistent across all focal lengths in the set because the filter always sits in the same position within the optical system. When switching from a 21mm to a 58mm, the look doesn't change—which is not guaranteed with front-mounted filters due to varying vignetting characteristics.
Graduated Filtration as a Narrative Tool
Instead of a fixed filter decision, DPs can alter filter intensity over the course of a film or sequence—graduated, scene by scene. The ARRI Impression V Filter System, for example, is offered in graduated strengths that can be employed as narrative progression: a film that begins with a clear image and becomes progressively softer and dreamlike with increasing emotionality, without a single VFX shot.
