History & Development

ARRI introduced the Signature Primes at NAB in 2018, as a direct response to the growing demand for Large Format cinematography. Development began in 2016, in parallel with the ALEXA LF camera. Unlike the technically neutral Master Primes, the Signature Primes were intentionally designed to convey a specific look. In 2019, the 280mm focal length was added as the thirteenth lens in the series. The lenses were developed in collaboration with Zeiss, with ARRI handling the optical design and Zeiss managing the manufacturing.

Practical Use in Film

Roger Deakins used the Signature Primes for "1917" (2019), utilizing their characteristic bokeh to separate foreground and background in the long, single-take sequences. "Dune" (2021, DoP Greig Fraser) primarily employed the wide-angle focal lengths of 14mm and 18mm for the desert landscapes. The lenses are particularly well-suited for portraits and emotional scenes, as they render skin tones warmer and more organic than technically neutral optics. The reduced micro-contrast often requires less diffusion on set.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to ARRI's own Master Primes, the Signature Primes offer less technical perfection but a more characteristic look. Zeiss Supreme Primes are direct competitors, but deliver more neutral, sharper images. Cooke S7/i Primes produce the classic "Cooke Look" with stronger micro-contrast. For productions with smaller budgets, the ARRI Signature Zooms offer an alternative, providing the same look at lower daily rental costs. The choice often favors the Signature Primes when soft skin tones and an organic visual language are prioritized.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
