LEE 132 "Medium Blue" – deep blue color correction filter (lighting gel) by LEE Filters, primarily used for moonlight and night effects.

Overview

LEE 132 "Medium Blue" is a color effect filter (lighting gel) from the range of the British manufacturer LEE Filters. It is a dyed, heat-resistant polyester film that is stretched in front of a spotlight, barndoors, or into a filter frame to color the light a strong blue. Unlike conversion or correction filters (CTB/CTO), the 132 is not used for white balance correction but for deliberate color design.

Within the LEE blue tones, the 132 is a rich medium blue, described by the manufacturer as a "deep moonlight effect" and classified as well-suited for "colour mixing."

Technical Data

The film absorbs a significant portion of the light and shifts it strongly towards blue. LEE specifies the following transmission values for the 132:

Light SourceTransmission (Y)Absorption
Daylight (Source C)8.3%1.08 stops (at 6774 K)
Artificial Light (3200 K)7.0%1.15 stops

According to the manufacturer, the chromaticity coordinates are x 0.137 / y 0.11 (Daylight) or x 0.148 / y 0.195 (Artificial Light). Due to the high light loss of more than one stop, a correspondingly more powerful spotlight should be planned for its use.

Available Forms

  • Roll: 7.62 m × 1.22 m (25 ft × 48 in), with 1" or 2" core
  • Sheet: Full Sheet 1.22 m × 0.53 m (48 in × 21 in), Half Sheet 0.61 m × 0.53 m (24 in × 21 in)
  • Quick Roll: Cuttable widths (approx. 2.5 cm to 1.17 m) at 7.62 m length

Set Usage

The 132 is typically used where a strong, cool blue cast is desired: for moonlight and night effects, for coloring backgrounds and cyclorama surfaces, for blue traveling matte backgrounds, and generally for color mixing in lighting design. Due to the significant light loss and deep saturation, it is more suitable as a creative effect filter than for subtle fill lighting.
