Lee 202 – color correction gel by Lee Filters that shifts tungsten light (3200K) halfway toward daylight (approx. 4300K); 'Half C.T. Blue'.

Overview

"Lee 202" is a conversion or color temperature gel (light gel, English: colour correction gel) from the British manufacturer Lee Filters. It is officially designated 202 Half C.T. Blue and thus belongs to the blue CTB series (Colour Temperature Blue), which makes warm artificial light cooler, i.e., "more like daylight." The gel is stretched in front of the light source – for example, in the filter frame of a spotlight, in barndoors, or as a cut sheet in front of LED or fluorescent panels.

The abbreviation "Half" indicates half the effectiveness compared to the full conversion gel 201 Full C.T. Blue. Within the CTB family, the 202 is thus positioned between full correction (201) and weaker gradations such as 1/4 CTB (203) or 1/8 CTB (218).

Use on Set

The 202 is typically used to adjust artificial light sources (Tungsten/Halogen, classically 3200K) to a cooler lighting mood without fully converting them to daylight. Common applications:

  • Partially matching Tungsten spotlights to HMI or daylight sources, for example, in mixed lighting in a room with window light.
  • Creating a cooler, but not completely neutral, light color when a slightly "daylight blue" character is desired.
  • Fine-tuning in combination with other gels when a full CTB gel would correct too much.

The gel can also be used in front of dimmable Tungsten fixtures; when dimmed, the lamp itself shifts warmer, effectively shifting the correction. Since the 202, like all blue gels, absorbs light, light loss must be factored in for corrections.
