Lee 139 "Primary Green" is a deep green lighting gel by LEE Filters used to color theatrical and film lighting fixtures.

Overview

Lee 139 "Primary Green" is a color-rendering lighting filter manufactured by the British company LEE Filters. It is a strong, saturated green filter from the LEE color palette, used in front of a light fixture to tint its output. It is classified among the primary color effect filters and is employed for rich green tones.

According to the manufacturer, the filter is particularly recommended for set lighting and cyclorama illumination (background/horizon lighting). Like all color filters, it is mounted in a heat-resistant manner in front of the light source, typically in a filter holder, within barn doors, or on a gel frame.

Technical Data

The following transmission values are taken from the LEE Filters datasheet and refer to a tungsten source (3200 K):

ParameterValue (Tungsten 3200 K)
Transmission Y10.1 %
Chromaticity x0.212
Chromaticity y0.717
Absorption0.99
Light Lossapprox. 3 1/3 stops

Due to its high saturation, the filter absorbs a significant amount of light – approximately three to three and a half stops must be accounted for, which should be considered during lighting setups.

Available Formats

Lee 139 is offered in sheets and rolls:

  • Full Sheet: 1.22 m x 0.53 m (48" x 21")
  • Half Sheet: 0.61 m x 0.53 m (24" x 21")
  • Roll: 7.62 m x 1.22 m (25' x 48")

Set Usage

Primary Green is suitable for highly stylized, color-intensive lighting moods, such as tinting backgrounds, cyclorama surfaces, for stage and concert lighting, or for effect lighting in film and television. As green can be critical in skin tones, the filter is usually applied specifically to backgrounds, walls, or separate effect lamps, not to the main light on performers.

For LED sources, LEE also offers an adapted version (CL139 / Cool LED Primary Green) that provides the same visual green effect on a cooler LED light source (above 6000 K) as the standard filter 139 on a 3200 K tungsten lamp.
