Godox TL LED tube lights in three lengths (39–129 cm) with 36 LED chips, CRI ≥96, app control and DMX compatibility for accent and background lighting effects.

Technical Details

The TL30 measures 39 cm, the TL60 measures 69 cm, and the TL120 measures 129 cm with a diameter of 3.8 cm and a weight between 0.6 and 1.8 kg. All models operate with 36 high-quality LED chips, achieving a CRI value of ≥96 and a TLCI value of ≥98. Power is supplied via integrated lithium batteries (runtime 1-9 hours depending on intensity) or an external power adapter. Control is managed through the Godox Light App, DMX512 protocol, or manual operation on the device with stepless dimming from 0-100%.

History & Development

Godox introduced the TL series in 2019 in response to the growing demand for compact, color-variable LED solutions. The Chinese company reacted to pioneers like Astera or Quasar Science, but offered a significantly more affordable alternative. In 2021, Godox expanded the system with accessories such as softboxes and honeycomb grids. The current generation (since 2022) features improved app connectivity and extended effect programs.

Practical Use in Film

Godox TL lights are particularly suitable for hidden accent lighting, background effects, and as portable light sources in confined spaces. In the Netflix series "Dark" (2017-2020), cinematographer Nikolaus Summerer used similar tube lights for dystopian bunker scenes. The compact design allows them to be hidden behind props or in vehicles. Typical workflows include preparing lighting sequences in the app with subsequent DMX synchronization for complex color gradients during shooting.

Comparison & Alternatives

Direct competitors include Astera Titan Tubes (higher light output, more robust construction, triple the price) and Quasar CrossFade Linear (better color rendering, fewer effect options). Compared to classic Kino Flo tubes, TL lights offer more flexibility in color design but do not achieve their light output for large-area illumination. For budget productions, they represent a practical alternative to more expensive systems, while high-end productions usually opt for Astera or ARRI SkyPanel.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
