Chinese manufacturer of LED panels and COB-LEDs (3300K–5600K, CRI 95–97). SL series up to 300W/58,000 lumens with 2.4GHz wireless control up to 100m range.

Technical Details

Godox LED panels achieve color temperatures from 3300K to 5600K with CRI values between 95-97 and TLCI values of 96-98. The SL series offers COB LEDs with 60W, 150W, 200W, and 300W, producing up to 58,000 lumens of luminous flux at 5600K. The VL system includes bi-color LEDs with app control and DMX-512 compatibility. Godox uses proprietary 2.4GHz wireless technology for remote control with ranges up to 100 meters. The devices operate with V-Mount or Anton Bauer batteries as well as mains power from 100-240V.

History & Development

Godox was founded in Shenzhen in 2009 and initially focused on photographic flashes. In 2014, they entered the film sector with LED panels, followed by the first COB LED series SL-60 in 2016. The X system for wireless flash control became established in film productions from 2017 onwards. In 2019, Godox expanded its portfolio to include the VL series with app integration. The Knowled series launched in 2021 with improved color accuracy and Quiet Fan technology.

Practical Use in Film

Low-budget productions utilize Godox equipment for interviews, documentaries, and web series. The SL-60 often serves as the key light in 2-3 person setups, while the VL-200 and VL-300 are used as mobile solutions in reportage. Netflix-approved productions use the ML series for color matching with other manufacturers. The wireless X2 trigger enables simultaneous control of up to 32 lights from different series. Godox softboxes and reflectors use the Bowens mount as an industry standard.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to Arri SkyPanel or Kino Flo, Godox offers 60-80% lower acquisition costs with comparable light quality, but with a shorter lifespan and less robust housings. Aputure is considered a direct competitor in the prosumer segment, while Nanlite achieves similar price points with sometimes higher performance. Budget productions under 50,000 Euros use Godox equipment, while large productions continue to be dominated by Arri, Broncolor, and Dedolight due to higher reliability and service networks.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
