Godox M1 compact RGB LED panel with 60 LEDs, 1800 lux at 1m, CRI ≥96, and 36,000 color variations for accent lighting in confined spaces.

Technical Details

The M1 generates a light output of 1800 Lux at a distance of one meter with 60 RGB LEDs. Color rendering achieves a CRI value of ≥96 and a TLCI value of ≥98. The panel offers 36,000 color variations and 15 special effects such as police lights, thunderstorms, or candle flame simulation. Control is via four rotary knobs on the housing or via the Godox Light app over Bluetooth 4.0. The internal battery allows for an operating time of 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the power setting.

History & Development

Godox introduced the M1 in 2019 in response to the growing demand for ultra-compact LED panels for content creators and smartphone filmmakers. The panel was positioned between the established Aputure MC and cheaper no-name products. In 2021, a slightly revised version followed with improved app connectivity and optimized color calibration.

Practical Use in Film

The M1 is primarily suitable as an accent light for close-ups and practical light sources in confined spaces. Due to its small size, it can be easily hidden behind objects or attached to metal surfaces with magnets. In the Netflix series "Dark," similar compact panels were used for the characteristic color accents in cave scenes. However, the panel does not achieve the light output for key light applications in larger setups.

Comparison & Alternatives

A direct competitor is the Aputure MC with comparable specifications but a higher price and better build quality. The Nanlite PavoTube II 6C offers more light output but is significantly larger. For professional productions, gaffers tend to opt for Astera Titan Tubes or Quasar Science Q-LED, which are more robust and brighter. The M1 remains a budget option for smaller productions and as fill light in larger setups.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
