Godox 200W LED continuous light with 58,000 lux at 1m, Bowens mount, stepless dimming, and silent cooling under 25dB.

Technical Details

The SL200II achieves an output of 58,000 Lux at one meter with the standard reflector. The die-cast aluminum housing measures 255 × 164 × 85 mm and weighs 1.9 kg. The fixture features stepless dimming from 10-100% via an LCD display and four control buttons. The built-in fan operates quietly at less than 25dB. Power is supplied by an external power adapter or optionally by V-mount batteries using a separate adapter. A Bowens mount allows the use of various light modifiers such as softboxes, reflectors, or projection attachments.

History & Development

Godox introduced the first SL200 generation in 2018 as a cost-effective entry into professional LED continuous lighting technology. The SL200II was released in 2020 with improved electronics, more stable color temperature, and reduced fan noise. The Chinese manufacturer Godox has established itself since 2009 as an alternative to established brands like Arri or Dedolight through aggressive pricing with acceptable quality.

Practical Use in Film

The SL200II is suitable for interviews, small studio setups, and as accent lighting in larger productions. Typical applications include greenscreen lighting, where constant color temperature is critical, as well as mobile shoots due to its compact size. As a key light, its output is sufficient for close-ups and medium shots, while additional lights are required for wide shots. The silent operation allows for use during sound recording without interference.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Arri L7-C, the SL200II offers significantly less light output (58,000 vs. 14,000 Lux) and no color temperature adjustment, but costs only a fraction. The SL300II with 300 watts offers more power, while the SL150II was designed for even more mobile use. Aputure LS 300X or Nanlite Forza 300 offer in similar price ranges sometimes better build quality and extended features like app control or variable color temperature.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
