Godox Softbox: light modifier family by Godox, typically with Bowens mount, for diffusing LED and flash light.

Overview

"Godox Softbox" does not refer to a single light fixture, but rather a product family of softboxes – light modifiers – from the Chinese manufacturer Godox (Godox Photo Equipment Co., Ltd., Shenzhen). A softbox is a foldable or connectable box made of opaque outer fabric with a diffusing front diffusion panel. It is placed in front of a point light source (COB LED fixture or studio strobe) and enlarges the effective light-emitting surface. The result is soft, directional light with gradual shadow edges – in contrast to the hard, high-contrast light of the bare source.

Godox softboxes are classified within the lighting/grip category as consumables or accessories: they do not generate light themselves but shape the light from an existing fixture.

Construction Types and Mounting

The family covers several common softbox geometries, chosen depending on the desired light character and catchlight shape:

  • Rectangular/Square Softboxes – Standard shape for broad fill and portrait lighting.
  • Octagon (Octa) – Octagonal shape for a round, natural-looking catchlight in the eyes.
  • Strip / Stripbox – Narrow, elongated shape for edge and contour lighting.
  • Parabolic Softboxes (e.g., the P-series like P90L/P120L) – Deep, parabolically shaped boxes for more focused, brighter center light.
  • Lantern Softbox (Lantern) – Spherical/lantern-shaped for omnidirectional, soft ambient light; optionally with a skirt to limit light spill.
  • Umbrella-Style – With umbrella mechanics for particularly quick setup and breakdown.

Connection to the light fixture is predominantly via the widespread Bowens mount (speed ring/adapter ring), making the softboxes combinable with many Godox COB LEDs (including the SL, UL, and VL series) as well as with Bowens-compatible studio strobes and third-party brands. Many models are also available with an attachable grid, which further concentrates the light and reduces spill light.

Use on Set

In film and video production, Godox softboxes are primarily used as key or fill light for interviews, portraits, and smaller sets. Larger boxes provide softer, more enveloping light, while smaller boxes yield a more directional, higher-contrast result. Octa and lantern shapes are preferred when a round catchlight or even ambient light is desired; strip boxes for contour lighting; grids when light needs to be kept away from the background or side areas. Due to the standardized Bowens mount, the modifiers can be flexibly swapped between different fixtures.
