35mm standard rolls have a core diameter of 50.8mm (2 inches) and vary in outer diameter between 178mm (400-foot roll) and 279mm (1000-foot roll). 16mm rolls use 25.4mm cores (1 inch) with capacities from 30 to 122 meters. The winding cores are made of plastic or metal with precise tolerances of ±0.1mm to prevent winding errors. Professional rolls feature flanges with standardized mounting holes for magazines and editing tables. For 65mm large format, the core diameter is 76.2mm (3 inches).

Thomas Edison introduced the first standardized 35mm roll with a 50-foot capacity in 1891. In 1909, the Motion Picture Patents Company established the 1000-foot roll as an industry standard, corresponding to the maximum hand-crank speed of projectors. In 1923, Kodak developed safety film rolls made of non-flammable acetate material as a replacement for explosive nitrate films. Cinematographers plan shots according to roll lengths: a 400-foot roll allows for a maximum 4-minute take, as seen in Orson Welles' famous opening sequence in "Touch of Evil" (1958). Stanley Kubrick used special 2000-foot rolls for "Barry Lyndon" (1975) to minimize splices in candlelight scenes.
