Canon 8-64mm T2.4

The Canon 8-64mm T2.4 is a zoom lens for Super 16 from the era when 16mm was the format for television reporting. Eight to 64 millimeters, meaning an eight-times range, at a constant T2.4 without ramping. Image circle 15.4 millimeters, PL mount, minimum focus distance 56 centimeters, weighing just over two kilograms with a length under 20 centimeters. Converted to Super 35, the range corresponds to 16 to 128 millimeters.

Why This Lens Has Survived

It was produced in quantities never seen for cinema lenses, and it was designed for continuous use. Both of these factors mean: it still exists, it still works, and it costs a fraction of a comparable modern zoom. It became known through its use on The Hurt Locker.

The Look

Medium contrast, warm color bias, soft corners at wide open aperture—the rendering that modern zooms deliberately correct. Focus breathing is remarkably well controlled: practically non-existent at the wide end, minimal in the mid-range, slightly increased at the long end, but still below what many newer zooms exhibit.

The Image Circle Is The Real Decision

15.4 millimeters is sufficient for Super 16 and nothing else. On a Super 35 camera, shooting must be done in a cropped window, and even more so on Full Frame. In practice, the lens is still regularly used on modern bodies—on an Alexa Mini in S16 mode as well as on a RED V-Raptor X, where the crop is drastic. Those who do this are trading resolution for rendering. This is a legitimate decision, but it should be made before the shoot, not on set: determine the recording format, set up the crop in monitoring, and adjust focus assist accordingly.

Limitations

T2.4 is not much on 16mm negative. If shooting film, lighting is essential. Digitally, on a cropped sensor, the loss of resolution is added—a fraction of 8K Full Frame remains in the S16 window. Both of these limitations are known and accepted; they are the price for a lens that looks the way it does.
