A zoom lens covers a range of focal lengths — typically 15-40mm, 28-76mm, or 70-200mm. On set, it saves lens changes and allows for quick adjustments. In documentaries and at live events, zooms are often the only option.
Cinema Zooms
Angénieux Optimo, Fujinon Premista, ARRI Alura — these are cinema zooms that cost €30,000+ and make few compromises. Parfocal design (focus remains constant when zooming), minimal breathing, constant aperture. An Angénieux Optimo 15-40mm is sharper than some primes.
The Zoom Shot
A zoom is not a camera move — it compresses space rather than moving through it. Kubrick and Altman used this as a stylistic device. Today, the visible zoom is considered more documentary or retro.
