3ds Max is Autodesk's professional 3D software for modeling, animation, and rendering, widely used in VFX, architectural visualization, and game development.

Overview

3ds Max (full name: Autodesk 3ds Max) is a professional Digital Content Creation (DCC) software from manufacturer Autodesk for 3D modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, simulation, and rendering. Alongside Maya, it is one of the established 3D applications for Visual Effects (VFX), architectural visualization (Archviz), motion graphics, and game asset production. Unlike most entries in this lexicon, it is not lighting or grip hardware on set, but a pure software tool for digital post-production and the CG pipeline.

3ds Max runs as a native Windows application and is licensed via a subscription model. Autodesk releases annual major versions named after their release year (e.g., 3ds Max 2027).

Features

  • Modeling: Polygon, spline, and parametric modeling, as well as procedural tools.
  • Animation & Rigging: Keyframe animation, character rigging, and skinning.
  • Rendering: Includes the Arnold renderer; third-party render engines such as V-Ray (Chaos), Corona, and others are also widely used for photorealistic or physically based image calculation.
  • Extensibility: Scripting via MAXScript and a Python API; extensive plug-in ecosystem.

Use in Film & TV

In film and TV production, 3ds Max is used in the VFX and CG pipeline for tasks such as set extensions, digital environments, architectural and product visualization, and motion graphics elements. While Maya dominates character animation in many large VFX houses, 3ds Max is particularly widespread in Archviz and motion design. The software has no direct function for set lighting or the grip department; it becomes relevant in post-production and for previs (pre-visualization).

Perspectives

Cinematographer

As a cinematographer, what I appreciate most about 3ds Max are the precise camera movement and lighting tools, which allow me to plan virtual shots that will later seamlessly blend with my real camera moves. The software helps me visualize complex match-moving processes and think through the integration of CGI elements as early as pre-production.

Director

For me, 3ds Max is an indispensable tool in creative development, as it allows me to transform storyboards into 3D previz and play through complex scenes beforehand. The software enables me to develop the creative vision together with the VFX supervisors and ensure that the digital effects optimally support the narrative.

Producer

For me, 3ds Max represents a significant budget item, as both the license costs and the qualified specialists are expensive, but the software allows us to replace elaborate practical effects with cost-efficient digital solutions. The precise previsualization also helps me to shorten shooting times and catch change requests already in preproduction.
