Definition

HDR (High Dynamic Range) refers to recording techniques and display technology that can reproduce a greater contrast range than SDR (Standard Dynamic Range).

Practical Application

HDR TVs and monitors achieve 1000+ nits peak brightness vs. ~100 nits for SDR. Formats: HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG. All major streaming services offer HDR content.

Technical Details

HDR10: Static metadata, 10-bit, PQ curve. Dolby Vision: Dynamic metadata, 12-bit. HLG: Broadcast compatible, no metadata. Mastering: Minimum 1000 nits peak, P3 color space.
