The overlap length is usually 0.5-2 seconds for dialogue, up to 5 seconds for atmosphere or music.
The sound bridge originated with the introduction of sound film in 1927 and was initially achieved mechanically by shifting the audio track on the film reel. Warner Bros. used it systematically from 1928 in "The Jazz Singer" sequels. In the 1940s, Orson Welles established the technique as a dramatic device. With digital post-production from the 1990s onwards, frame-accurate editing of sound bridges became standard. Modern NLEs have enabled real-time playback of complex overlap edits since 2000.

Bei Rückblenden verwende ich den Originalton als Brücke zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. In Spannungsszenen setze ich bewusst auf harte Schnitte ohne Tonbrücken, um Unruhe zu erzeugen.
Tonbrücken reduzieren meine ADR-Kosten erheblich, da sie Dialogfehler und schlechte Takes kaschieren können – das spart mir oft 2-3 Studiotage. In der Postproduktion verkürzen sie die Schnitt-Phase um etwa 15%, da weniger präzise Sync-Arbeit nötig ist.
