Shutter Cut

Insertion of a shutter blade into the light path to create a clean, hard-edged cutoff of the light beam.

Overview

On set, a shutter cut refers to the insertion of a shutter blade (flap) into the light path of a lighting instrument to shape the beam at a defined line. Unlike using a freestanding flag or cutter on a stand, the cut is made directly on the fixture using blades permanently mounted to the light.

The term originates from stage and film lighting and describes both the action ("to set the cut") and the result: a sharp, controlled limitation of light, which prevents spill onto areas that are intended to remain dark.

Functionality and Edge Hardness

The sharpness of the edge depends on where in the light path the blade is positioned:

  • Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight (ERS / Profile Spot / Leko / Source Four): Four shutter blades are located at the internal focal point of the fixture, where the light rays intersect. This is where the cleanest, linear cuts with a hard edge can be produced; the edge can be adjusted from hard to soft via the lens focus.
  • Barn Doors: The flaps mounted on the front of many Fresnel, open-face, and LED lights serve the same purpose but produce a significantly softer edge due to their proximity to the light source. A razor-sharp cut is not possible with barn doors alone.

Rule of thumb: The further the blade is from the light source, or the more precisely it sits at the focal point, the harder and cleaner the cut will be.

Usage on Set

Shutter cuts are part of the standard repertoire of Gaffers and lighting technicians to:

  • Prevent stray light (spill) from hitting set pieces, walls, or the camera.
  • Precisely terminate light areas at edges such as door frames, windows, or wall edges.
  • Limit the light beam to a specific shape or line.

For linear, hard cuts directly on the fixture, ellipsoidal reflector spotlights are typically used; for soft boundaries or quick adjustments, barn doors are employed. Where a freestanding cut with variable distance and hardness is required, flags, cutters, and fingers on C-stands are used as supplementary tools.
