Rosco 68 Sky Blue color filter that converts tungsten light (3200K) to daylight temperature (5600K); light loss: 2.5 stops.

Overview

"Rosco 68" refers to the color filter No. 68 from the manufacturer Rosco, with the color name "Parry Sky Blue". It is a colored sheet (gel) that is stretched in front of a lighting fixture or placed in a filter frame to color the light blue. The filter is part of the Rosco color palette and is available in the Roscolux and Supergel product lines with identical numbering.

It is not a correction or diffusion filter, but a saturating effect filter (Color Effect). According to the manufacturer, it is particularly suitable for early morning sky tones and is popular with lighting designers for illuminating cycloramas (cycs) and stage horizons.

Standard delivery sizes are individual sheets (usually in the format 20 x 24 inches / approx. 50 x 60 cm) as well as rolls (usually 24 inches x 25 feet). Roscolux sheets are constructed so that the color layer is embedded between clear protective layers to extend the lifespan under hot lights and reduce color fading.

On-Set Usage

The filter is placed in front of the light exit surface of a lighting fixture – using a gel frame in the accessory slot, clamped to the barndoors, or as a pre-made sleeve over fluorescent tubes.

  • Creation of cool, saturated blue tones, e.g., for sky, night, or morning moods.
  • Classic for coloring cycloramas, backdrops, and stage horizons.
  • Since the filter absorbs about 86% of the light, the light loss should be factored into exposure and fixture selection.

Note: Color filters are consumables – the sheet fades over time due to heat, which is why heavily used filters need to be replaced regularly.
