Rosco 74 "Night Blue" is a deep blue color filter gel from Rosco's Roscolux line with 4% transmission, used to create artificial moonlight in cinematography.

Overview

"Rosco 74" refers to the color filter R74 "Night Blue" by the manufacturer Rosco. It is a color gel (colloquially "gel") placed in front of the light source, not a light source or grip equipment. The filter is part of the Roscolux series and is also available in the more heat-resistant Supergel line.

R74 is a very dense, deep blue. Rosco describes its effect as "fantasy moonlight" – a stylized, cool moonlight that is deliberately not naturalistic but rather strong and saturated. Due to its low light transmission, the filter is typically not used for broad ambient lighting but as an effect light.

A transmission of around 4% means that the filter blocks the vast majority of the light. Therefore, a significant light loss must be calculated when using R74 – a stronger fixture or a shorter distance is usually necessary to achieve usable brightness.

Usage on Set

R74 is primarily used where a clearly recognizable, rich night or moonlight effect is desired:

  • Backlight / Edge Light: as a backlight or sidelight to separate figures and objects from the background.
  • Moonlight Effect: stylized "moonlight through the window" in interiors or as a night atmosphere outdoors.
  • Accent and Mood Lighting: as a color contrast to warmer or neutral key light.

As with all deeply saturated gels, heat development on powerful fixtures should be considered; for hot lights, the more robust Supergel version or sufficient distance from the light source is recommended. With LED fixtures featuring integrated color mixing, a dedicated color filter like R74 is often superfluous in practice, but it remains a common tool for Tungsten and HMI units.
