Rosco #98 is a Roscolux gel, a neutral gray ND filter transmitting approximately 25% light (roughly 2 stops of density).

Overview

Rosco #98 refers to the filter sheet "Medium Grey" (US spelling "Medium Gray") from the manufacturer Rosco. It is not a light source, a lamp code, or grip hardware, but a color-neutral neutral density (ND) filter for reducing the amount of light without significant color alteration.

The number 98 is the fixed Rosco catalog number for this filter. It is available in both the stage/theater line Roscolux and the film/TV program Cinegel, and is categorized by Rosco as a neutral density filter.

Technical Data

Rosco specifies a light transmission of 25% for the filter; this results in an attenuation of approximately two f-stops (-2 Stops). As a gray ND filter, it is designed to reduce brightness without shifting the color temperature of the source.

The filter is available as a standard sheet in the size 20" x 24" (approx. 50 x 61 cm) as well as in rolls. Roscolux filters are manufactured using a co-extrusion process from polycarbonate or as deep-dyed polyester, which places the color layer between clear carrier layers, protecting it from heat and abrasion.

On-Set Usage

Rosco #98 is used to reduce the brightness of a light source without altering its light color. Typical applications:

  • Matching lights of different wattages or brightness levels within a setup.
  • Dampening individual lamps when dimming is undesirable for color reasons (dimming shifts color temperature, a gray ND filter does not).
  • Reducing light intensity at windows, practicals, or visible sources in the frame to avoid overexposure.

Since the filter is supplied as sheets or rolls, it can be cut to size and attached to barn doors or gel frames using filter frames, clamps, or clothespins. Stronger or weaker attenuation can be achieved with other ND numbers in the same series or by stacking multiple layers.
