Rosco 89 moss green color filter corrects fluorescent light to daylight color temperature (5600K) with 61% light transmission.

Overview

Rosco 89 is a color filter (color gel) from the manufacturer Rosco with the color designation "Moss Green". It is not a device or a lamp, but a colored plastic film that is placed in front of the light exit surface of a lighting fixture to color the light. The number 89 is the fixed Rosco color number and is accordingly found as R89.

The filter belongs to the Roscolux series, Rosco's standard range of color, correction, and diffusion filters for event, theater, and film/TV lighting. The same color number 89 is also available from Rosco in related product lines (e.g., the more robust Supergel/Cinegel series). According to Rosco, Moss Green is suitable for mood, mysterious atmosphere, and toning light.

Roscolux filters are made from deep-dyed polyester (thinner film) or body-dyed polycarbonate (somewhat thicker and more temperature-resistant), depending on the version. Both variants are designed to be flame-retardant. The filter is available as sheets (standard sheet size 20" x 24", approx. 50 x 60 cm) and as rolls in various widths.

On-Set Use

With approximately 45% light transmission, Moss Green costs about one stop of light; this must be factored into the lighting design. The muted, yellowish-green hue is used for atmospheric, slightly desaturated, or slightly eerie looks, as well as for subtly toning existing light sources.

  • Insert the gel tension-free into a color frame, filter frame, or gel frame; do not place directly on hot lenses.
  • With high-power lighting fixtures, ensure sufficient distance from the light source and good ventilation, as color gels can fade and warp under heat.
  • Like all saturated color filters, Moss Green ages under heat; replace faded pieces in time to maintain consistent color over multiple shooting days.
