Rosco 3029

Overview

Rosco 3029 "Silent Frost" is a diffusion filter from the Cinegel product line by manufacturer Rosco. It is not a color or conversion filter, but a pure scattering material: a comparatively dense, heavy vinyl diffuser that scatters light into a uniform field of soft, almost shadowless light.

The eponymous feature is its quietness. Unlike thin plastic diffusion films (e.g., classic frost or tough materials), the heavier vinyl hardly flutters or rattles in the wind. This makes 3029 particularly suitable for exterior shoots where lighter diffusions would cause audio problems.

Use on Set

3029 is typically not stretched directly in front of the lens, but in the light path to soften hard sources. Common applications:

• Stretching over frames, butterflies, and overheads to create a large-area soft source
• Diffusion in front of lights or daylight to reduce harsh shadows
• Exterior shots with wind where low-noise diffusion is required (hence "Silent")

As a vinyl material, 3029 is more robust and heavier than thin frost films, making it attractive for permanent setups and stretches. As with any dense diffuser, a significant light loss is to be expected; Rosco does not publish an official transmission value for 3029, so the actual attenuation should be measured on set.
