Rosco 3028

Overview

Rosco Cinegel #3028 is a diffusion gel from the manufacturer Rosco's Cinegel series. Its official designation is "Tough 1/4 White Diffusion". It is not a color or correction filter, but a light-scattering material (White Diffusion) that softens the light beam of a fixture and reduces the hardness of shadows.

The "1/4" strength is the weakest of the common gradations within the Tough White Diffusion family. According to the manufacturer's description, #3028 has "similar properties to Tough 1/2 White Diffusion, but is less dense" – meaning the diffusion is subtle and the light loss is correspondingly low.

Rosco's White Diffusion gels are available in graduated densities. #3028 is the 1/4 variant; it is occasionally referenced as "1/4 216," derived from the standard diffusion material 216.

Technical Characteristics

The material is manufactured on a heat-resistant polyester (PET) base. The designation "Tough" signifies a higher melting point for Rosco: such gels can be placed directly in front of or close to most hot lighting fixtures without immediately melting.

On-Set Usage

#3028 is used when only a slight diffusion is desired – for example, to minimally soften a hard source without noticeably darkening it or significantly altering the character of the light. It is typically applied as a gel on the fixture, in filter frames, in front of barndoors, or on diffusion frames. Due to its low density, less output is lost compared to 1/2 or full White Diffusion, and more brilliance is retained in the light.
