Rosco 39 (R39) is the Roscolux color filter "Skelton Exotic Sangria"—a deep saturated magenta with approximately 10% light transmission.

Overview

"Rosco 39" (also known as R39 or #39) refers not to a lighting fixture or grip equipment, but to a color filter (gel) from the Roscolux series by manufacturer Rosco. Its full name is "Skelton Exotic Sangria". It is a deeply saturated, rich purple that produces a strong magenta-violet light in the beam.

The filter is placed in front of the light source (in a gel frame, frame, or as a sleeve over fluorescent tubes) and colors the light passing through. Roscolux is one of the most widely used gel series worldwide; in regions outside of North America, a comparable range is marketed under the name Supergel (Supergel 39 carries the same color name).

Due to its high saturation, the filter absorbs a lot of light. Dealer specifications indicate a light loss in the order of around 3 stops; dense saturation filters like this therefore require a correspondingly strong light source to be effective.

Usage on Set

R39 is distinctly an effect filter, not a correction filter. Typical applications include:

  • Stage, musical, and concert lighting with strong colored light
  • Saturation and mood colors for night, club, or fantasy looks
  • Colored accent and background lighting as a special effect

As the transmission is very low, the filter is more suitable for strong point and spot lights (e.g., profile spotlights) than for broad area fill lighting. The high density can thermally stress conventional incandescent gels; sufficient distance or ventilation and appropriate frames must be planned.

Origin of the Name

The "Skelton" designation traces back to the American lighting designer Thomas R. Skelton, who was primarily known for ballet and Broadway productions. According to Rosco, the color was created as a replacement for a discontinued filter; Skelton was allowed to name the new shade ("Exotic Sangria"), and Rosco added the prefix "Skelton" in his honor.
