The fixture measures 290mm in diameter with a depth of 85mm and weighs 2.8 kg. At its core are 576 individual LEDs in an RGBWW configuration with a CRI of >96 and TLCI of >98. DMX-512 control is via 5-pin XLR, alternatively via app using Bluetooth or CRMX wireless technology. The aluminum housing is IP65 classified and operates in a temperature range of -20°C to +45°C. Three variants are available: Standard (mains powered), Battery (V-Mount battery), and Yoke (with mounting bracket).
Titan Tube developed the Orbiter in 2019 in response to the growing demand for high-quality, compact RGB fixtures. The Open Face version followed in 2020 as a complement to the original Tube format. The Austrian company thus established itself alongside Arri and Litepanels as a premium provider in the LED segment. In 2022, the Titan ecosystem was expanded with further accessories such as Snapgrid and DoPchoice softboxes.
Christopher Nolan used Orbiter Open Face fixtures for interior shots in "Oppenheimer" (2023), particularly for dynamic color changes in the laboratory sequences. The fixture is suitable for accent lighting, background colors, and as an unobtrusive fill light source in confined spaces. Its silent operation allows for sound recording without post-processing. Issues include harsh shadows due to the point-source nature of the light and high power consumption during continuous operation.
Compared to the Arri SkyPanel S30-C, the Orbiter offers higher color saturation with less weight but achieves only 60% of the maximum brightness. The Litepanels Gemini 1x1 Hard Panel delivers similar light quality but is three times heavier. The RGBA version of the Orbiter omits white LEDs in favor of purer colors. For pure daylight applications, the classic HMI spotlight remains more efficient, while the Orbiter excels in mixed light and color effects.
Ich schätze die präzise Farbwiedergabe des Orbiter besonders bei Hauttönen – der hohe CRI-Wert erspart mir aufwändige Korrekturen in der Post. Die harte Lichtcharakteristik nutze ich gezielt für dramatische Schatten, muss aber bei Porträts immer diffundieren. Das kompakte Format passt in jede Kameratasche und der lautlose Betrieb rettet mich bei spontanen Interviews.
Der Orbiter wird zu meinem emotionalen Pinsel – ich kann binnen Sekunden von warmem Kerzenlicht zu kaltem Neonschimmer wechseln und so Stimmungsbrüche visuell verstärken. Besonders liebe ich die App-Steuerung für subtile Farbverläufe während langer Dialogszenen. Die 360-Grad-Abstrahlung kreiert wunderschöne indirekte Beleuchtung, wenn ich gegen weiße Wände leuchte.
2.800 Euro Anschaffungspreis amortisieren sich durch Wegfall von Farbfolien und Farbtemperatur-Konvertern schnell. Ein Orbiter ersetzt drei konventionelle Scheinwerfer verschiedener Kelvin-Stufen, was Transportkosten reduziert. Der niedrige Stromverbrauch spart Generatorkapazität, allerdings benötige ich für Vollausstattung teure V-Mount-Akkus als Backup-System.
