Lightstar Luxed: LED panel by Lightstar Equipment with 192 RGBW LEDs, flicker-free up to 10,000 fps, 86,000 lumens output with sub-18 dB noise operation.

Technical Details

The unit measures 420 × 320 × 180 mm and weighs 8.4 kg. The Lightstar Luxed uses 192 individually controllable RGBW LEDs with a lifespan of 50,000 operating hours. Brightness control is stepless from 0.1% to 100%, with the Flicker-Free system enabling shooting up to 10,000 fps. The integrated cooling system operates in Whisper Mode below 18 dB noise level. Three variants are available: Standard (25° beam angle), Wide (45°), and Spot (12°). DMX-512 control is via 16-bit resolution with 24 channels.

History & Development

Lightstar Equipment developed the Luxed in 2017 in response to the growing demand for flicker-free LED systems in the high-end sector. The first generation was launched in March 2018 and was already used at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2020, the Luxed Pro followed with improved app control and expanded color modes. The current Generation III from 2022 additionally offers a pixel mapping function and further reduced operating noise by 30%.

Practical Application in Film

The Lightstar Luxed was prominently used in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" (2020), where DoP Hoyte van Hoytema utilized its precise color temperature control for the time inversion sequences. Its flicker-free technology makes it indispensable for slow-motion shots and Phantom camera applications. Typical workflow: Pre-programming lighting scenarios via the Lightstar Control App, DMX integration into existing gaffer systems. Advantage: No post-production of flicker effects necessary. Disadvantage: High acquisition cost and more complex operation than standard LEDs.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike the ARRI SkyPanel S60-C (43,000 lumens), the Luxed delivers double the light output in a similar form factor. In contrast to the Kino Flo Celeb LED (fixed color temperature), it offers full RGB control. Modern alternatives include the Aputure Nova P300c and the Astera Titan Tube for linear applications. The Luxed is preferred for studio productions with high quality demands, while lighter systems like the Aputure 600d are often chosen for location shoots.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
