Matte black, heat-resistant aluminum foil by Lee Filters (Code 280) for blocking spill light and reflections on fixtures.

Overview

Lee Black Foil is the matte black aluminum foil from the British manufacturer Lee Filters, cataloged under filter designation 280. It belongs to the product group of so-called Blackwrap or Cinefoil materials – malleable, double-sided black-coated aluminum that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. On set, it is used to reduce unwanted spill light and control reflections on luminaires or reflectors.

Unlike fabric flags or plastic parts, the foil is heat-resistant and can be shaped by hand into almost any form, which it then holds. This makes it particularly suitable where the waste heat from a spotlight would burn other materials.

On-Set Use

The foil is applied directly to the luminaire, its barndoors, or the reflector and secured by folding or creasing. Typical applications:

  • Extending barndoors to specifically limit light leakage
  • DIY flags, snoots, and masks (improvised light shapers)
  • Taping or covering light leaks on the housing of a luminaire
  • Suppressing reflections, for example in tabletop and product photography, to shadow individual areas of small objects

Since the material does not have a tape backing, it is usually secured mechanically by clamping, taping, or simply folding around edges. It is comparable across brands in the industry to Rosco Cinefoil / Blackwrap and GAM BlackWrap and is often colloquially referred to synonymously as "Blackwrap" or "Cinefoil."
