Lee 778

Overview

Lee 778 "Millennium Gold" is a color effect filter (lighting gel) from the British manufacturer Lee Filters. It belongs to the so-called 700 Series ("Designer Series") – a range of special colors developed in collaboration with lighting designers from theater, film, television, and architectural lighting.

The gel provides a warm, golden-yellow to amber hue. Characteristic is the dependency of the effect on the light source: with an incandescent/tungsten source (warm white), 778 produces a rich amber, while the same gel appears significantly cooler in front of an HMI/daylight source (cool white).

Use on Set

778 is primarily an effect and mood filter, not a conversion filter for exact color temperature correction. Typical applications:

• Warm golden accent lighting and architectural/facade illumination.
• Creating warm lighting moods (sunset, candlelight/firelight, "golden hour") with tungsten sources.
• Deliberate play with source differences: strong amber in front of tungsten, cooler gold tones in front of HMI.

Note: Due to the relatively low light transmission, a noticeable light loss can be expected. With hot, powerful luminaires, sufficient distance or a heat-resistant version (high-temperature variant, designated "HT" by Lee) should be ensured.
