Overview
Lee 228 "Brushed Silk" is a diffusion filter from the LEE Filters range. Unlike classic diffusion filters such as Opal or Frost, Brushed Silk softens light in only one direction: the beam is fanned out along one axis, while remaining largely directed along the perpendicular axis. This creates an oval light field stretched in one direction. The filter is designated number 228 in the LEE system and is supplied in rolls as well as sheets.
Effect on Set
The directional diffusion allows light to be selectively softened along one axis without scattering it all around. Practically, this means:
- Brushed Silk can be oriented in front of a light source so that the diffusion runs horizontally or vertically – depending on how the sheet is rotated.
- It is suitable for simulating a long, soft light source and softening shadows in one direction while preserving modeling in the other.
- As with all diffusion filters, sufficient distance from the lamp should be maintained, as the material can suffer heat damage from direct contact with hot light sources.
