Overview
LEE 273 Soft Silver Reflector is a reflector material from the British manufacturer LEE Filters. In the LEE range, it is designated by the number 273 and belongs to the group of reflector foils – materials that reflect light (bounce), and are explicitly not for color correction or effect gels, which transmit and color light.
The official LEE product description is simply: "Produces soft reflection. White backed." The material thus provides a soft, silvery reflection and is white on the back. It is used to redirect existing light (daylight or artificial light) as a fill, to lift shadows, and to create a broad, not too harsh lighting effect.
Classification: Reflector, Not Gel
Important for correct use on set: LEE 273 is not a front filter stretched in front of a light source to change color temperature or color. It is a bounce surface. Compared to a matte white bounce surface, the silver variant produces a more efficient, slightly more brilliant reflection, but retains a softer diffusion than a hard mirror or a smooth silver foil due to its "soft" character. LEE also advertises the material as usable on both sides – each side produces a slightly different effect.

LEE 273 is offered – like the other LEE reflectors – as a roll and as sheets. The availability of individual cuts varies depending on the dealer.

On-Set Use
- As a fill light / fill to lift shadows in faces and scenes without adding an extra light source.
- For redirecting daylight into interiors or into the shadow areas of outdoor subjects.
- As a soft bounce source when a direct light would be too harsh, but a matte white surface provides insufficient brightness.
The material is typically stretched onto frames (flags/frames), reflector boards, or polyboards, or tensioned over clamps, and aligned with the light source via the geometry of the reflective surface.
