Lee 219 (Fluorescent Green) is a greenish color conversion filter by Lee Filters for matching tungsten light to fluorescent sources of unknown color temperature.

Overview

Lee 219, designated by the manufacturer as "Fluorescent Green", is a technical conversion or correction filter (Lighting Gel) from the Lee Filters range. It belongs to the category of greenish correction gels used to adjust the color of artificial light to match the characteristics of fluorescent tubes ("Fluorescent"). According to the manufacturer, it serves for "general Tungsten-to-Fluorescent correction" when the exact color temperature of existing fluorescent lamps is unknown, providing a medium correction strength.

Practical background: Fluorescent tubes often emit a distinct green cast that is registered as unnatural by the camera. When mixing Tungsten or other light sources in the same shot, a greenish gel like the 219 can be used to replicate the green component of your own fixture, so that both sources behave similarly and the overall green cast can then be uniformly neutralized in-camera or in post-production.

Technical Data

The following values are taken from the official Lee Filters datasheet for the 219:

MeasurementDaylight (Source C)Tungsten (3200 K)
Transmission Y31 %27.1 %
Color coordinate x0.2190.319
Color coordinate y0.3340.426
Absorption0.510.57

Available forms:

  • Roll: 7.62 m × 1.22 m (with 1" or 2" core)
  • Sheet in full and half sizes
  • Custom cuts ("Quick Rolls") in various widths

On-Set Usage

The 219 is used like standard lighting gels, stretched in front of the fixture – in the Gel Frame, on clips on the barndoor, or on a separate frame in the light path. Typical applications:

  • Mixed Lighting with Fluorescent Tubes: Matching a film light to existing ceiling lighting where the exact color temperature and green component are unknown.
  • Look Creation: Creating a deliberate greenish light character, for example, for office, industrial, or clinical atmospheres.

Important distinction: The 219 is a color correction gel, not a diffusion material – it primarily changes the color, not the spread of the light. It is also distinct from a pure "Plus Green" gel (the 244 in the Lee range); the 219 is intended as a combined Tungsten-to-Fluorescent solution for situations where the lamp color temperature is unclear. Like all correction gels, it noticeably reduces light output (transmission around 27–31%), which must be factored into lighting planning.
