Overview
Lee 223 is a color correction lighting filter from the British manufacturer LEE Filters. Its official designation is 223 Eighth C.T. Orange, commonly abbreviated on set as 1/8 CTO. It represents the weakest grade in the CTO (Color Temperature Orange) series, used to slightly shift daylight sources towards the warmer tungsten color temperature.
CTO filters, along with CTB (Blue), are among the most frequently used conversion filters in film and television lighting. The Lee 223 is part of a graduated family – from Double CTO, Full, 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 down to 1/8 – allowing DoPs and gaffers to precisely adjust the white balance of lights in fine increments. The 1/8 CTO (223) is the weakest, meaning the least warming, grade.
On-Set Usage
The filter is placed in front of the light source – for example, in the filter frame or barndoors of a spotlight, on a frame, or directly in front of the lens of an LED or HMI fixture. Typical applications:
- Subtle Warming: As the weakest CTO value, 1/8 CTO is used for very subtle corrections where a full or half CTO would already be too warm.
- Fine-Tuning Daylight Sources: Adjusting HMIs or daylight LEDs to a warmer overall mood or to match existing mixed lighting.
- Skin Tones: Gently warming skin tones without visibly coloring the image.
Conversion filters like the 223 absorb less light than strong effect colors; the low intensity of the 1/8 CTO means a correspondingly low light loss.
